There really are some strange ones amongst the collection. If you’re into bad tattoos, strange tattoos or just the generally weird, you’ll enjoy.

One of them I love, though. The second to last one with the cats face and the tiny prints round the neck, I think is really beautiful. I’d love a tattoo like that. Do you like it?

Before you can get your Chinese symbol tattoo, you need to have a stencil of it. And before you can get a stencil made you need to find an accurate translation of the word you wish to use.

I discovered a wonderful web site where you can see the Chinese symbol for many, many words. If you go to Chinese Tattoos and look up in the top nav bar you’ll see common Chinese tattoos pages 1-4. If you look through those pages you can see the actual symbol for many of the popular words.

You’ll be in very safe hands at Chinese Tattoos. You might want to go with one of those words or you can consult with them to get a more personalized word. I figure if you’re going to live with this inking for the rest of your life, get the best, most individualized word you can.

You’ll find the Chinese symbols for: Adventure, Angel, Badass, Beautiful, Beauty, Beauty …

Whoa! Was that a misprint? Did I just type beauty twice?

No I didn’t. THAT is why you need an expert. If you want the characters for beauty, do you want the characters for beauty in general or beauty as it pertains to a beautiful woman? It does make a difference.

So you’ll find different symbols for words such as calm, clarity and complete.

Complete is a good example. The word can mean that something is done,OR it can mean something is perfect. Which do you want?

There are two different symbols for words such as truth, understanding, wisdom, wish, and THREE differing symbols for world.

And of course you’ll find everything in between – two different symbols for life, four for live and four for love.

Honestly, you can’t just hope that some automatic translation device will choose the right symbol, can you!

If you choose to consult with Chinese Tattoos you will get

A pdf file of the character with your desired dimensions that you can print. It will include notations for “Left”, “Right”, “Top”, and “Bottom”, so that there is no confusion at the tattoo parlor.

A sound file of the character(s) pronunciation in Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese, so that you know exactly how to say the words appearing in your tattoo.

A graphic file of your tattoo being drawn with proper stroke order, just in case you want to become familiar with drawing the character(s) yourself.

I can’t stress how important that first one is. There are THOUSANDS of people walking about with upside down Chinese symbol tattoos! If you’re not an expert is is a very easy mistake to make.

And wouldn’t it be nice to be able to pronounce your symbol? Mmmm?

The dangers of translating English to Chinese symbol and the other way round are legendary. This funny video shows just what can go wrong when people who are not fluent in both languages try to translate Chinese characters into English. What a disaster!

But amusing though it is, you don’t want something like this happening on your body. That tattoo is there for life. So have a chuckle at the video but do remember to spend plenty of time getting an accurate translation before you go ahead with that tattoo.

There is another amusing video at English to Chinese symbol.

Found an interesting lens at Squidoo all about translating names in Chinese symbols.

They use the name Scarlet O’Hara – she of Gone with the Wind fame – as an example of the different ways it can be translated depending on which method of translation is used.

Also shows an image of a tattoo on a woman’s stomach that is supposed to say her boyfriend’s name but actually says something else. All part of the dangers of letting an unqualified person give you a translation of an English name into Chinese symbols.

People really do need to give a little more thought before they dash of and get themselves inked.

Valentine’s Day and tattoos are a match made in hell!

I kid you not.

Don’t go there. With all the warm fuzzy feelings that Valentine’s Day inspires it is so easy to be carried along on a ground swell of love and lust and believe that the most romantic thing you could do is have I love Doris blazoned across your chest.

It isn’t – and if Doris (or Jeff, or Bobby or baby dumplings or whoever) really loves you they will be the first to agree.

A tattoo is forever. And even if you do have it done in Chinese symbols, you still know that those squiggles means “I love Doris”.

Remember Paris Hilton and her ill-considered tattoo of her current boyfriend’s name? And 3 weeks later they split.

Once the love has gone you don’t want to see your ex’s name every time you look in the bathroom mirror. And consider your new partners feelings. Do you really think that Mary Sue wants to read “I love Doris” every time she snuggles up to your chest?

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been together or how solid your relationship is – you simply don’t know what the future holds.

So put a rein on those romantic Valentine’s Day urges and if you simply must declare your undying love upon your person, make sure it is a temporary tattoo.

So you’re excited about exactly WHICH word or phrase you should get translated into a Chinese symbol for your new tattoo.

Do you go for your name – that’s a good choice.

Or do you go for a phrase that sums up your attitude to life?

Ultimately the choice is yours. Remember that a tattoo is for life so chose a word or phrase that deserves to be carried with you forever.

Just to give you an idea, here are just a few of the thousands of words and phrases that have been translated into Chinese symbol words recently.

Phrases/Words To Live By

Live your Life

he who dares wins

special little bunny rabbit – (shudder) I don’t think I want to even go there!!

Liberty, equality, fraternity

Family

Harmony

Can you see yourself wearing a statement like that?

First Names

Sarah

Virginia

Ben

This lady will translate ANY word – just tell her what you want.

So make your choice wisely. Think about your life and what philosophies are important to you.

Is there a word that you try to live by? Is there a phrase that sums you up? Or someone special that you want to carry with you – a grandparent that gave you unconditional love as a child or the spouse that hung in through everything?

Or your name. The special word that you carry through life.

Whichever word or phrase you’ve decided is the right one for you, get it translated into beautiful Mandarin so that you can get your own Chinese symbol word tattoos.

2009 - The Chinese year of the Ox

If you’re born in one of the Ox years then your personality traits are;

strong leadership qualities

dependable

strong work ethic

wonderful organizers

strong

responsible

Less favorable traits associated with this sign are narrow minded, stubborn, unemotional and low public relations skills. But, of course, that would not include any readers of this blog!

So if you were born in a year of the Ox then a Chinese symbol tattoo such as the one above might be very appropriate for you.

Chinese astrologers believe that 2009 will be a period when we are capable of making lasting accomplishments. This is true for individuals, societies and the human race in general. There may be times when we are lacking in motivation and challenge for everyone is to generate the enthusiasm and desire to act. Those individuals and organizations that do will create enduring benefits for themselves and the world.

If you want to get a Chinese symbol tattoo but want something more personal than your year of birth, then the link below will interest you. This lady will translate ANY word into a design suitable for Chinese symbol tattoos.
